back to reality

I'm back! And my break was perfectly perfect. Nothing too insane, but a whole lot of relaxation and fun. I won't bore you with the details, but I will share a few visual highlights. Some beautiful blooming flowers at my parent's house, my cuddly pups, a frozen yogurt bar, an enchanting castle and a quaint Kelly green house in downtown Lawrence.

I had nine glorious days to catch up on some sleep, enjoy too much good food & drink, and spend time with the ones I love most! But now, it's back to life. Today was the first day of spring quarter and it's already shaping up to be my busiest quarter yet. I'm going to need to adopt the attitude that "busy" is good. Better to be busy than to be bored! So, I'm wishing all of you a happy, busy week!

good morning

...the perfect soft headboard and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' pillows.
I'd crawl in right now.
Happy Saturday, readers! And Happy Spring Break to me! My tropical destination this year is none other than Lawrence, Kansas. And the latest report from my boyfriend: 6 inches of snow expected this weekend. Joy!

I'll admit that I'm quite jealous of all my friends who'll return next week bronzed, beautiful and relaxed. But I am really looking forward to my trip and personally, I think it's better than any resort in Mexico! I haven't seen Mikey since my last visit almost five weeks ago and I'm counting down the days.

But, until then (Wednesday) I'm headed home to Mercer Island for a few glorious days with my parents, brothers and dogs. Have a great weekend!! xo

fake-bake.

Ah, the simple joy of the sun. The way it feels on your skin as you're basking in it on a hot day at the beach. Even better, the way you feel the next day when it has settled into your skin, giving you that sun-kissed glow and baby freckles we all long for. How can something that feels (and looks) so good be so bad for us? Deadly, even.
I remember being a little kid and getting such a bad sunburn on my back that I had to wear my dad's XXL t-shirts to bed -- my bright red tiny body covered in aloe head to toe. Back then it wasn't about getting a tan; it was about having so much fun at the pool that I didn't want to stop for a second to put on sunscreen, let alone go home before it was dark out.
So when did the sun become so terrible for us? I'll be the first to admit that I've visited the tanning booth one too many times. I haven't been in almost a year now, ever since the reports came out claiming that tanning beds were as deadly to us as arsenic. Arsenic?! That scared me away from 'Ultimate Sun' faster than you can imagine.
       But if I've already been going tanning for years (indoors and out) is the damage already done? I have one friend who claims that if we've already been doing it all this time, "we're already screwed" so we should just keep on tanning. Part of me almost wants to believe her so that I can (ignorantly & blissfully) keep my summer glow all through those long winter months. But deep down, I know that it's completely ridiculous and untrue. It's that same philosophy of "I already had one bit of cake, I might as well eat the whole thing." And we all know that gets us nowhere, except for 20 pounds heavier and unable to fit into our jeans.
       I know there are lotions and creams out there now -- spray tans, even -- that claim to give us that same look. But it's not the same! Don't worry, I'm not trying to justify my way back to the tanning bed. I just wish that the end result wasn't wrinkles and skin cancer (so not worth it).

no green beer for me

I so wish I was eating a decadent breakfast at this perfect little breakfast table right now. Instead, I'm scarfing down my oatmeal as I review note cards for my Final in an hour. Ah, the glorious life of a college student.

[But, I will say I'm in love with those pale blue chairs and the floor length romantic mirror- the perfect accessories to compliment that gorgeous dark wood floor]

Happy St. Patrick's Day! No green beer for me tonight -- last final tomorrow morning! xox

mini mad men

{image via she wired}
I'm loving these new Mad Men dolls -- the perfect excuse for grown-ups to play with Barbies again. I, for one, definitely played with dolls much longer than I care to admit. But now, I can play guilt-free. How perfect is Betty Draper's 60's housewife get-up? As much as I'd hate to be a woman on that show, I'd steal the wardrobe any day.

blue crush

My favorite color is blue. I love to wear blue, write with blue, and look at blue... on the walls, on the furniture or on the curtains. I love navy blue, sky blue and royal blue. And I adore all blue images that follow.

Blue can be calming or exhilarating, and there's nothing better than a beautiful shade of blue against crisp white furniture and accessories.
I'm obsessed with the last bedroom. The exposed brick wall is brilliant and the warm, shabby-chic accessories make me feel like I'm returning home from a day on the slopes.

P.s.. I obviously love a good blue room, but you gotta love a fabulous blue shoe:

thinking of home...

This morning, as the world is blooming once again here in Ellensburg, I'm dreaming of the beautiful springs at our old house on Parkview Drive. I miss that street and I miss that house. These pictures remind me so much of the interior -- and they have my mom's name written all over them! The spaces are so airy and full of light, with clean lines and fresh colors. Not to mention the chimney wall hoods over the cook-tops that will forever remind me of 4720 Parkview.

Happy Sunday -- I hope you all remembered to spring forward. I for one was thankful that I didn't have to get up for anything today (no lost hour of sleep for me!) xo

"eat food. not too much. mostly plants."

The thought of fresh fruit has been making my mouth water for weeks now. With the warm weather and frequent sunshine, I'm just craving that juicy sweetness that can only come from a big bowl of berries.
And once in a while, there's nothing wrong with taking some of that good-for-you fruit and turning it into a topping for a decadent treat- right?
{images, via cupcakes and cashmere}

It somehow makes the cupcake seem healthier with a big shiny strawberry plopped on top of it...
That being said, I will say that I'm so glad to have the winter [mostly] behind us. Those long, cold & dreary days just make me want to cozy up to a big bowl of something warm and fattening! And it's so delicious, but not so great for my 'skinny jeans.' Thankfully, the Farmer's Market will be back in a few weeks, my cravings for filling foods will be gone and we can once again stock the fridge with fresh produce.. phew! Food that grows from the ground or drops from a tree always makes me feel better than the processed stuff that comes from Aisle 7. Tonight for dinner was farm-raised Atlantic Salmon, sweet potatoes and a big mess of vegetables! Delish. Hope you're all having a great weekend! xo

P.s.- On your way out, revisit some photos of healthy goodness from [my favorite place] Pike Place Market! ::::

come on in

A warm welcome, or a sweet goodbye. Wouldn't you just love coming home to this?
And for the back door, a kid-friendly mudroom designed practically and beautifully. I'm loving the painted boot-box holding the precious little one and her green Crocs. I miss being three years old, when wearing a hot pink shirt with floral pants and green Crocs was absolutely acceptable- encouraged, even.

Remember: don't neglect your entry ways! It's the first and last thing people will see when visiting your home. Keep it clean and simple and always beautiful. xo

slow down

I'm 21 years old. I'm not "old" by any means, but I'm finding myself feeling progressively less and less "young." No, my knees aren't hurting and my eye sight isn't going bad... although it does take me quite a bit longer to recover from a night out- but that's a different story.

I'm not really talking physically; I'm talking mentally, spiritually... emotionally.

Why does time seem to absolutely fly by as you get older? When you're young, the days are endless. The hours pass by without a thought and it feels like you have an eternity ahead of you. You're anxious to grow old and it seems to take f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

Then, all of a sudden, you turn 20 and you look back and wonder how you got there. I wake up every day and feel like there's no way that I'm already in my fourth year of college. I just graduated high school last week... didn't I?

It makes me sad when I think about how much of my life has passed me by in what feels like a minute. Every time I turn my calendar to a new month, I cringe. I know that I still have so many things to look forward to- graduation, a career, marriage, kids, travel, holidays, pets... retirement! And while I'm excited for all these things, I wish I could slow it all down somehow. I have my whole life to enjoy these things; I'm in no rush to get there.

So, 2010, slow down! I don't want to look back when the clock strikes midnight in 2011 and wonder where the time went.

Happy Wednesday -- halfway through the week already (see how quick the time goes?!). Enjoy it! xo

l'amour

{image: ffffound via this is glamorous}

I'm a sap for all-things romance and this picture just melts my heart. It's simple and silly and absolutely adorable. I think I need a hug from my very far-away boyfriend! But instead, I'm watching '16 & Pregnant' and filling out my Mass Media study guide. Hurry up, spring break!

sleepy, dreamy, wonderful

{images via shabby chic}

Dreamy in every sense of the word. Speaking of dreamy, I'm getting sleepy! It's been a long Monday with an even longer week ahead. Sweet dreams, xo.

[connecticut wedding] crush

Take a minute to drool over a perfect Connecticut wedding. I die for the flowers! (Blush Floral Design)

I wouldn't change a thing about this wedding. And there's nothing more to say. Love!

oscar's best [2010]

Who knew that the punishment for living on the West Coast is that the red carpet starts at 3pm? Well, this was a big surprise to me today... and a bit detrimental to the PowerPoint presentation I planned on spending the whole afternoon working on. However, I managed to fit in both and catch all the celebs on the red carpet.

My faves? Rachel McAdams, Cameron Diaz, Maggie Gyllenhal, Meryl Streep, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Rachel McAdams is one of my all-time favorite actresses. From 'Mean Girls' to 'The Notebook', the girl can do no wrong. Not to mention the fact that she's drop-dead gorgeous and absolutely perfected the red carpet tonight. Nice work, Rach.
Cameron killed it in a fantasy Oscar de la Renta gown, and although Maggie Gyllenhal's dress seems a bit casual for the awards, I thought she looked adorable.
Meryl Streep looks just beautiful! Very age-appropriate and classic.
And Sarah Jessica's dress is one that only Sarah Jessica can pull off. Couture Chanel genius.

Now that Awards Season is over, it's back to reality: a presentation on Global Media and final exams next week. Don't tell my professors, but red carpet fashion is way more fun.

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!

oscar's best [2009]

The Oscars are coming! The Oscars are coming! Tomorrow night is my favorite red carpet night of the whole awards season and I can't wait. To prepare myself, I've decided to revisit the best best best of last year's Academy Awards.  Jennifer Garner can do no wrong, and I'm obsessed with the bright pink in the sea of black and red on Natalie Portman.

As for the rest of them? Although I'm not much of an Angelina fan, I am a fan of the flawless emerald earrings with that simple black gown. Sarah Jessica could pass for a princess bride, Jennifer Aniston is and always will be my favorite, and Marion Cotillard just pulls off that beautiful mess of tulle with such ease.

Fabulous. And big shoes to fill for tomorrow! You'll find me glued to the t.v. with a big bowl of ice cream waiting for the first guest to step out of their limo. Check back Monday for an updated 'best dressed' for 2010!
