weekend in the woods

This afternoon, nine of us are piling in the Sequoia with too many tents, coolers, jars of peanut butter and cases of beer. We'll be spending three days and two nights with no electricity and no mattresses. And get this: you have to pay to take a shower. Hello, greasy hair!
Isn't it gorgeous though? That's our actual campsite at Alta Lake State Park and it couldn't be prettier. Too bad the weather won't be warm enough for us to enjoy the sparkling lake in our backyard. I'll certainly be packing extra wool socks and fleece hoodies. And, according to a local, we should come prepared with bear spray -- a thought that terrifies me to no end. Cross your fingers that we'll have good weather, lots of fun and no bears!!
See you Monday!! xo

on display

I am totally in love with the exposed-shelf look for a summer kitchen right now. Is there anything more refreshingly airy? Plus, it gives you an excuse to put all your pretty dishes on display. My Nana is the queen of beautiful dishes. Over the years she has gathered quite the collection of serving trays, ice cream bowls and cheese plates in exotic, gorgeous patterns. I can only imagine how divine that extra large white hutch would look with her collection gracing its shelves.
What do you think? Are you brave enough to open up your cupboards and put your "stuff" on display?
I'm off to a full day of classes, work and homework on this very windy Thursday; Wishing all of you a stress-free, beautiful day -- it's almost the weekend! xo

no-baking necessary

Last week, the Copy Desk Chief brought in a little treat to ease the pain of a long night of editing. And I must say, these certainly did the trick. People were shocked to hear that I had never heard of/tasted a "No-Bake Cookie." Now that I've had one, (or four) I'm surprised too. I'm a chocolate-peanut-butter-baked-goods-addict and this small, simple little cookie accomplishes all of that and more. I haven't tried out the recipe on my own yet -- and hopefully won't be until my pre-summer diet starts working -- but here it is in case anyone is craving a small piece of heaven...

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3 cups quick cooking oats
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Directions
  1. In a saucepan bring sugar, cocoa, margarine, milk, and salt to a rapid boil for 1 minute.
  2. Add quick cooking oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well.
  3. Working quickly, drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper, and let cool.
Cook Time: 15 minutes; Ready In: 25 minutes

{image via weheartit}
Wishing a Happy Happy Birthday to my best friend in the whole world, Maggie! The week-long celebration starts today, so don't be surprised if you don't see a lot of action coming from mckenzie blair for a few days. Have a splendid Wednesday! xo

cute, casual & comfy

I keep finding myself back on the TOMS Website, trying to decide which pair of these adorable canvas shoes I'm going to buy. Part of me wants to choose a classic color that can go with anything; but how can you not be tempted by the blue zigzags, the artsy splatters or even those gold sparkles?
They even have some cute styles for your man...
...or for your wedding day!

Delightful, right? Help me choose! Which pair do you like best?

[The best thing about these stylish shoes: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need... "One for one."]

manastash ridge

As promised, here are a few more pictures from the most charming and stunning hike up the Manastash Ridge in Central Washington. But don't be fooled by the beauty, it was absolutely brutal. I'm still feeling the burn -- Enjoy!

online shopping addiction

Goodbye, bank account. Today I stumbled across a new website, Mod Cloth. It was love at first sight, and just in time for summer I discovered the most perfect dresses for the season. And as if they didn't look cute enough, their names certainly won me over.
1- Honey of a Dress
2- First Dance Dress
3- Fanciful Skies Dress
4- Red Grapefruit Dress
I have to own a dress called 'Honey of a Dress.' It's just too perfect. Other things on my wishlist?
*Toeses Are Roses Sandals
*Juice Bar Shades
*You Skirt My Feelings
*Cream Soda Jumper
*Raspberry Rocker Bag
[... See what I mean about those names??]

I hope you're all enjoying the last few hours of weekend bliss. I'm looking forward to a short week of 'real life.' My best friend's birthday celebration begins on Wednesday, a special visitor flies in on Thursday and we leave for a weekend camping excursion on Friday -- yay! I'm off to fall asleep to Pretty Woman on t.v. ... xo

modern marvel [mercer island]

Check out this ultra-hip home located just a few houses down the street from my parent's house on the Island. The clean lines, crisp colors and open layout are a dream -- one that continues to the backyard with the lovely outdoor 'living room.' This house is modern design in all it's glory, right down to the fresh accessories. Enjoy!

simple saturday

Hi all -- Happy Saturday! It's a gorgeous one in the 'Burg. We took a long, strenuous and beautiful hike this morning after spending last night at the College Rodeo - a very 'Western' weekend if I do say so myself (more pictures coming soon). What are you up to? Hopefully enjoying a few days off from school, work or anything else that keeps you busy Monday thru Friday! xo

earth day

[image via weheartit}
Happy Earth Day! If only I could spend the day frolicking through a beautiful open field [like this girl] and truly appreciate the Earth in all its glory. However, I have a long day of work, classes & studying. Hopefully, wherever you are, you can spend some time outside and enjoy it! :)

headboard heaven

A headboard. Such a simple bedroom accessory that can make all the difference in your bedroom. I love the coziness of the padded, cloth headboards but I'm also obsessed with those wooden rhinestone-studs mixed with the soft pastel bed linens.
Or, if you're feeling really crazy, dare to make a statement with a stimulating pattern like these! I love love love the yellow floral against the charcoal wall. Perfection.

anthropologie strikes again

I made a pact with myself five days ago: no heat-styling tools to be used on my hair for two weeks. That's right, no blow-dryer, no straightener, no curling iron... My hair deserves a break.

I've been piling on the leave-in conditioner and letting it dry naturally, trying to give my locks some R&R. So far it hasn't been too hard, but I'm not sure what I'll do this weekend when I actually have to head out and look cute. Perhaps I'll buy some of these adorable hair accessories from Anthropolgie? I'm loving the coral and yellow flower one!

I hope you all had relaxing weekends. Is it just me or is Monday morning creeping up faster and faster these days? Luckily, I'm off to a very productive start; I've already finished most of my schoolwork for the whole week, and I'm heading to bed in hopes of a good night's sleep and another productive day tomorrow! xo

love me some shoes.

Lately, I've taken a liking to the 'wedding shoe picture.' Simple, sweet & stylish.
And last but not least: my favorite picture, and my favorite shoe. Yes, please.
