I'm in the market for an alternative to my gigantic weekday bag. It's overly stuffed, gets in the way and very quickly becomes a black hole of makeup, receipts and loose change -- not exactly ideal for a night on the town. So, I'm obsessing over these chic and cheerful options that will no doubt add something special to any outfit, all the while forcing you to cut the clutter and enjoy the party. Love!

What are your weekend plans? For the first time since the big move, I have a fairly low-key weekend ahead and I'm looking forward to crossing things off the apartment to-do list, enjoying the unseasonably warm Chicago weather and teaching myself how to use the public transit system {!}. Have you ever moved across the country? It's not easy, logistically speaking, and I'm feeling the pain as I settle into my new space in Chicago with nothing more than a few boxes of clothes. All the furniture, decor and pretty little accessories from apartments past got left behind in an effort to ship as little as possible. And while the shoppers at Goodwill were likely having a heyday, I was pathetically mourning a loss and envisioning all the work to be done to set up my new home.

But now, as I sit at my computer excitedly browsing for online inspiration, I'm having a new vision -- an adorable little apartment filled with brand new stuff, including patterned chairs, bold lighting and monogrammed touches throughout.

So as we welcome 2012, I can successfully use the cliched 'out with the old, in with the new' philosophy and embrace my blank canvas. Perhaps I'll even venture out to the local Goodwill and see if I can benefit from someone else's cross-country move!

How was your Christmas? Mine was lovely and filled with a last-minute Christmas Tree adventure, lots of wrapped goodies for the dog, a sparkly gift to myself, cheesy colored lights and (of course) matching pajamas. What could be better? Hope yours was just as magical.

I'm off to Chicago in just two days, and plan to soak up as much family down time as I can before my plane takes off and I soar off to my new life in the Midwest. Cheers!

Part of the reality of moving to a new city is a very tiny budget and an even tinier apartment to decorate with that very tiny budget. As I plan for my new space, I'm having to get creative, get thrifty and get used to feeling slightly claustrophobic, but I'm learning that this could actually be kind of fun.

These days, the internet is overflowing with inspiration and my wheels are officially spinning with thoughts of pint-size furniture, simple accessories and lots of light. But first on my list is a storage solution for a girl with a lot of shoes and a cramped closet. So tell me . . . how do you save space while still keeping your style?

a new adventure

I'm back in action with some exciting news to share...

I'm returning to my Midwest roots and moving to Chicago after the holidays! I'm all at once excited, terrified, anxious and hopeful for all that comes with a new adventure, and I can't wait to share details and stories with all of you along the way.

In the meantime, I'm knee deep in boxes, job searches and adjusting my wardrobe to fit in with big city style -- and frigid weather! For starters, I'm dreaming of opaque tights, classic accessories and the perfect fur vest. fall is fabulous

The leaves are changing color. Say it ain't so! When I was in high school and college, I thought time flew by. I never wanted to miss a night with friends, or a football game, or an awkward dance, because before I knew it I was a sophomore and then a junior and then, almost overnight, I was a senior walking through the field house in an ugly cap and gown.

Since graduating college, though, I've learned the true meaning of "time flies." Having a real job means that each week blends into the next, September no longer means the start of a new year and before you know it, you've been at your job for six months in what feels like two. And the leaves are changing!

Admittedly, the vast majority of you are already missing summer. Not me. I live for fall -- the weather, the fashion, the lifestyle. How could you not love chilly football weekends, the first pot of chili and dusting off your favorite boots and chunky sweaters? Eek!

I hope your week is off to a great (and not-quite-as-busy-as-mine) start, and you're taking a moment to appreciate the beginning of what is sure to be a fabulous fall. Happy Tuesday!

Happy Friday! Don't you just love this quote? I feel like it perfectly describes most 23-year-olds like myself, and it's certainly making me feel better about life on this dark, rainy morning.

That's the [funny, frustrating] thing about life -- no matter how old you are or what stage you're at, there are always choices and uncertainties and "what-if's" and forks in the road. But I love how DVF puts it, because while it might not be clear which option to choose or which road to venture down, if you stay true to who you are and the kind of person you want to be, you'll be okay.

What are your weekend plans? My schedule is full of football games, hair appointments and birthday dinners, but I'm wishing I had some fabulous occasion to wear that floor-length fuschia gown to -- it's almost too gorgeous. Enjoy!

With 365 days in a year, it's tough to come up with creative, fashionable looks day in and day out. Which pants go with which tee? Does this shade of blue go with this shade of green? A girl can only do so much!

That's why I love... the dress. When you find the perfect pattern in just the right fit, you can't go wrong. Throw on some colorful accessories and you're good to go. That's my kind of outfit, and I'm simply swooning over Anthropologie's collection. All three styles above can be toned down for work or totally spiced up for fun. Perfection! I'm off to another busy day at the office, in shock after looking at my calendar and realizing that we're halfway through August already. The summer flew by -- partly because it's my first summer not nannying by the pool all day, and partly because we haven't hit 80 degrees once this summer. Yikes. Happy Tuesday!

I'm positively drooling over these work spaces! While my office building gets a giant makeover these next couple months, I'll be spending many, many days working from home and would gladly take any of the above to call my own. It's tough to draw the line between cluttered & clean, decorative & distracting, and organized & overwhelming, but a beautiful, inspiring work space is so important, don't you think?

Happy Sunday! I love the slow pace of this day. Long mornings spent sipping coffee in pajamas and extra special family dinners on the patio. That's my kind of day -- enjoy it!

Yes, you read that right -- I said fall preview. Can you believe it? As much as I hate to admit that summer is rapidly disappearing, I always get a tad bit giddy dreaming of pulling out my chunky sweaters and tall boots in anticipation of the first chilly afternoon.

And oh my goodness, I'm feeling more than a tad bit giddy over Banana Republic's Mad Men Collection for fall. So chic, so fun and so 1960's. Do you love? I, for one, will definitely be adding some lace, pearls and a fabulous pair of cigarette pants to my fall wardrobe this year!

Just completely obsessed with BHLDN's fabulously quirky shoes. What's not to love about glittery Mary Jane's, oversize poppies and vintage polka dots? It's certainly time for me to expand my shoe collection to include some of these beauties. I tend to play it safe on my feet with neutral shades and comfortable styles, but I'm ready. I love my accessories. I used to gravitate toward loud clothes to spice up my outfits. Hot pink & floral prints were hard to miss in my closet. But I've recently realized that my favorite look takes a simpler approach -- softer fabrics in neutral shades are typically more flattering and will go with everything... And allow for lots of fun accessorizing.

Wouldn't you just die for Kate Davidson Hudson's collection of goodies? The studded bangles, the vintage cocktail rings, the fabulous green crocodile skin clutch...

I suppose I should expect nothing less from ELLE Magazine's accessories director (hello, dream job!), but getting dressed in the morning sure would be fun with choices like that.

Going totally crazy for these wedding inspiration photos tonight. I love the idea of embracing God's naturally beautiful creations & using them in your wedding decor. What could be better than overgrown hydrangeas, a simple twine bow & a torrential downpour to celebrate your newlywed bliss?

Until I started blogging & closely following way too many other sites, I never really realized how many wedding-planning options were out there. But I say, why not stick with simple, unfussy details that can be found in your backyard? They can't go out of style and they're beautiful any time of year -- pretty hard to go wrong there.

fashion bloggers: friend or foe?

Anyone else out there have a love/hate relationship with fashion blogs? Half the time they inspire me to embrace my closet, take wardrobe risks & be stylish every single day. But sometimes, they make me feel like I could never compare, and that my blue jeans & crewneck Gap t-shirts aren't good enough in this big, fashionable world. Such a dilemma.

But despite our tumultuous relationship, I keep coming back for more -- especially over at Atlantic-Pacific. I'm continually impressed by Blair's bold looks, and I love that I couldn't define her style in just one word. In a semi-nutshell, I would use the words classic, quirky, darling, edgy & fascinating. I'm not even sure that those adjectives can be used in the same sentence, but that's the beauty of Atlantic-Pacific. It's all the styles that I love, hate, aspire to & only dream of, mixed into one inspiring fashion blog. If you haven't yet, go there. Now. And enjoy!

Some days I'm drawn to modern, & sometimes I lust for edgy. But tonight, I'm craving comfortable. I love the homey look of these rooms and can almost smell the homemade brownies baking in the oven. Big windows, perfectly flawed wood floors & flowers on the table make me feel right at home -- the best feeling a house can conjure.

My sincerest apologies for such sporadic posting in recent weeks. I've been dealing with a difficult doggy death, a spontaneous trip to see my best friends in the Midwest & too many other things. I get far too excited inside when I find a new jewelry designer that I l-o-v-e. The problem with most of them is that I can't afford even the simplest piece in their collections. And while nothing's different in this case (sigh), I'm just crazy for Satomi Kawakita's bracelets & rings. I can't get enough of the use of natural gems & mismatched metals, and I'd proudly stack those rings on my fingers any day.

You wouldn't know it by stepping outside around here, but summer is certainly near. Long weekends at the lake & lazy afternoons on the beach are on my mind -- and so is the perfect bikini to go along with it.

I've been swooning over the above options from Anthropologie. Muted colors, playful ruffles & feminine silhouettes seem like the perfect combination for a summer suit, don't you think? What's your go-to swim wear? While I tend to resort back to a classic black bikini most of the time, I'd love to try something bolder this summer. Suggestions much appreciated!

"Inviting" is an adjective I've always aspired to, whether it be in the way I carry myself, or the way I decorate my home. And this house has "inviting" nailed down. I envision neighbors dropping by to drop off homemade banana bread and strangers pausing to say hello during their evening stroll -- I know I would. All I know is that I spend far too much time dreaming of a home like this one in my future... talk about curb appeal!

Are you a front porch person? It's a sentiment that reminds me of the Midwest, where the neighborhood kids play night games & the moms borrow milk for baking. I might be biased, but I think it's the best way to live, and I'm certainly missing Wisconsin these days. Spring is the most wonderful time of year in a land where winter lasts six months... shorts & flip flops are the norm when the temperature passes 50; the smell of backyard barbecues fill the air come May 1; and everyone's outside, grinning from ear to ear because they haven't felt the sun since September. So, here's to everyone back home, likely coming out of hibernation this weekend. Cheers!

I promised myself just after the engagement that I would not post about the Royal Wedding... so I'm not. Instead, I'm posting about a wedding that's much more my style -- free of 18 karat sapphire rings & long, dramatic trains; free of giant, famous cathedrals & horse-drawn carriages; free of security, paparazzi & too much hype. Nope, this wedding offers sweet, simple details that seem just right for such a joyous day: bright colors, a cocktail dress, lots of cupcakes & happy tears. Perfect!

After a whirlwind week, I can't say that I'll mind putting my feet up and relaxing for a few days. And yes, I will be taping the big event and soaking up all the drama on Saturday, but I'm too old and too busy to sacrifice a night's sleep. {Thank goodness for DVR.} Will you be watching? Here's to a royally grand weekend, and no more talk of the affair next week!

Once again, Apartment Therapy proves that a small house can be cool in its seventh annual "Smallest Coolest Home Contest." And as a self-proclaimed homebody, it should come as no surprise that I'm a total sucker for these cozy spaces! A dash of color here and there, floods of natural light, and the perfect placement of a few chosen prints can instantly turn a too-small space into a comfortable, humble abode. The style, creativity and love is pouring out of these homes and it's making me eager for a tiny place of my own to transform. Space is totally overrated!

I'm off to tackle the literary world tonight and dig in to the stack of books from Amazon piled in the corner. Now that I don't spend my days reading about Middle Eastern Politics and Investigative Journalism, I finally have the time & the desire to read for fun again and I'm so excited! {I'm also dying for book suggestions -- have any must-reads?} Happy Wednesday!

Sunglasses are one of my favorite Springtime accessories. They're easy as pie to throw on and can instantly transform a so-so outfit into a movie-star-quality ensemble. Spring fashion is so refreshing! The bright colors blooming on the street sneak in to our closets & offer up a much needed change in wardrobe -- and nobody does it better than J.Crew. Their new spring looks are so effortlessly cool, blending the best of winter's neutrals with the brightest summer shades. Grey, white & navy will never go out of style, no matter the season. But a coral lip or a bold straw hat can instantly transform any outfit into the perfect warm weather get-up. Is it June yet?

I stumbled upon a fabulous house with a fabulous story from The New York Times tonight and I must say, it's hard to find anything in this house that I don't like. The muted colors, the antique details, and the fresh flowers & citrus centerpieces. I love it all, especially the story of how it came to be:

"After Hurricane Katrina destroyed the house... they bulldozed it, raised their lot four feet and built a classic cottage, complete with shutters and a picket fence, for $356,000."

As we attempt to repaint nearly every surface in our home, I realize more and more the profound effect color can have on a room. And I'm dying for this natural, country-living palette. wedding inspiration [homemade pizza]

This couple has it right: simplistic, romantic and fun.

As much time as I spend pouring over extravagant wedding photos each week, I'll admit that I've always been a sucker for the most intimate of ceremonies, followed by simple & perfect receptions -- much like this one. The bride & groom wed in a private ceremony near the water on Whidbey Island (just outside of Seattle!) and celebrated afterwards at a friend's house, wearing aprons & making homemade pizzas. Adorable. While I love the fuss of big, fancy vows, I think I love this kind of party even more. Happy (almost) Wedding Wednesday!

Every Sunday night around this time I start to think about Monday. After two whole days of pure weekend bliss, Monday morning & the upcoming week start to weigh heavily on my mind. But this week, I have reason to look forward to the usually-dreaded first day of the week: I'm going on my first official business trip! A veteran who's been on too many business trips might call me crazy for my delight. I'm not sure how it happened, but Olivia Palermo has slowly shifted from the girl I loved to hate on The City, to the girl whose style I most admire! I've never seen her in a look I didn't love and apparently, her street style morphs beautifully into her gorgeous Tribeca apartment. She most perfectly walks the line between simple & extravagant and I'm loving it, right down to the bright orange vintage Hermes tray. So fun!

Have you ever sneaked a peek at the New York Times real estate section... just for fun? I sure hope so, because I do all the time. I like to click through the virtual tours & dream of buying a fabulous vacation home on the East coast. And I just love the character of the properties out there.

How fantastic are the wall-to-wall windows on the yellow walk-up on the beach? Or the pop of cobalt blue in an otherwise stark white kitchen? I'm swooning over the exposed brick walls, old fashioned radiator & spiral iron staircase in the last image. It's all so city-dweller chic, and I'm totally digging it. What kind of getaway house would you purchase if money was no issue? I'd combine the three above for a very confusing, but very stylish abode.

I am so dying for Spring right now. Want to know why? I finished college today! And the sun stayed out until nearly 7:30 p.m. in honor of my big day. Now I'm so anxious for fabulous weather I can't even stand it. And what goes better with dreams of nicer days than the happy colors, vibrant patterns & girly touches of these Kate Spade accessories? I'd wear all three of them together with my dark denim shorts & favorite white tee... and I'd be happy as a clam. Kate Spade truly nails the feminine touch!

Now that I'm done with school, I hope to make a swift return to the blogging world & perhaps even show my face at the gym again (maybe!). There's nothing quite like the moment your favorite magazine comes in the mail. You throw the cell phone bills, the thank-you notes & the Pottery Barn catalogs aside before sinking into the couch with the latest issue. It smells good -- like a pleasant mix of fruity perfume samples and freshly printed ink -- and it feels good in your hands. It's a relaxing and enjoyable process as you flip the pages, dog-ear your favorites and store old issues for future inspiration.

So, imagine my surprise when I fell in love with the fabulous new trend of online magazines. My first thoughts were as follows: "It won't be the same," "I spend enough time on the computer," "No." But I was pleasantly surprised with the interactive process of reading these impressive publications. Are you on board yet? If you've hesitated in fear of giving up one of your most treasured past times, take the leap with a few of my favorites:

The best part? Some of my favorite bloggers edit, write and create the content. I'm so glad I stumbled upon these playful shots over at Apartment 34. These Charlotte Taylor looks are so fabulously fun and they're certainly bright enough to lift my spirits after a rough couple of days (I'm sensing a trend). And although I'm not quite bold enough to wear socks with heels or loafers with a sun dress, it's still nice to look at, right? What do you think -- would you rock the socks-with-heels look? When done right, I think it's darling, but so many things could go so terribly wrong that I'm completely intimidated.

It's official: I got a job! I'm so thrilled and relieved and excited and I couldn't wait to share with the rest of you. I'll be living and working in Bellevue starting in just a few weeks, so I've been fervently hunting for apartments as well as a whole new work wardrobe. Unfortunately, my college uniform of hoodies & yoga pants just won't cut it at the office.

Above, I've compiled an inspiring collection of colors, patterns and products that I'm dying to fill my closet with before my first day. I certainly need to stock up on a few staples, including a fitted blazer, a simple tote and comfortable flats. For work, I think it's important to stick to primarily classic pieces in soft, neutral colors. That way, you can mix in bold patterns or statement pieces of jewelry on occasion. What do you think? Do you have any must-haves for the office? I could use some advice before I hit the mall!

I'm gleaning some serious inspiration tonight for my home & my closet from these images. I love the built-ins, exposed wood and pedestal sinks in this townhouse. It's clean colors and fabulous architecture instantly reminded me of J.Crew's same concepts (a pale blue, floor length skirt & a layered ruffle dress are seriously aesthetically pleasing). I really love when fashion and design overlap, don't you?

We're on a mission to spruce up the upstairs bathroom on a very tiny budget. Luckily, it's a small space so it won't take much to get there, we just have to choose wisely. Our first stop yesterday was to Anthropologie for some playful drawer knobs. We had so much fun sifting through the options and choosing a few to take home. We threw caution to the wind and chose a very random, very wide array of options & I'm already loving our choices! In such a small space, it's the little things that can brighten things up & add a whole lot of drama. Next up, a fresh coat of paint & a fabulous Roman shade for the window.

It's amazing what sorts of little treasures you'll find when you spend some quality time browsing the web. This morning, my heart skipped a beat when I stumbled upon Mayfly Designs' custom, handmade jewelery.

All the pieces have that unique, crafty look that's so hard to find in stores. I'm dying for the soft fabrics, brass hardware & mustard yellow flower of the Naomi, and the angelic off-white look from that perfectly-named Grace necklace. The everyday collection continues with pearls, semi-precious stones, organza & gold silk. Yes, please!

I was lucky enough to be a part of this fun day on the streets of downtown Seattle in Occidental Park, and I'm just thrilled with how they turned out! . . . we went crazy with Christmas cheer cutting down our own tree on a sunny day in the Pacific Northwest . . . hung our favorite ornaments and supported our home team atop the tree . . .

. . . I spent three wonderful weeks in Wisconsin, reuniting with old friends & my handsome boyfriend . . .

. . . took a whirlwind trip to Miami, where I saw the sun for the first time in months and enjoyed a sunset boat cruise and a few Coronas . . .

Dark hardwood floors get me every time, especially against the crisp white walls and simple furniture adorning these beautiful rooms. An understated chandelier, a double-sided floral headboard and a perfectly draped claw foot tub round out my favorite touches.

This is just the kind of peaceful abode that I dream of escaping to on stressful days . . . no unnecessary clutter, just soft colors, pretty things & a purring kitten. Perfection.

Luckily, I haven't had one of those stressful days in quite some time. I took a very extended holiday and spent almost too much time sleeping in, eating good food and relaxing with old friends. Here's hoping you got to do the same. Happy Thursday!

Excellent advice in these days leading up to the 25th. Try not to let the chaos get to you. Don't stress about having the perfectly wrapped gift, the most delicious cookie or the best decorated tree. These are the fun extras that are meant to be enjoyed this time of year, but it's not really what the holiday is about! Take some time to focus on Jesus, the "reason for the season," and savor the special times with close friends and family; I know I will! xo.

I think it's a grand tradition to switch out your bedding for the winter months. It makes the bed feel luxurious and extra cozy when the temperatures drop. These Maple Falls sheets from Anthropologie would be the perfect swap for my baby blue bedding. They scream style and they look Christmas-cozy. Do you swap your sheets in the winter?

I'm cooped up in the house without a car today. I thought I'd pout about it, but I'm thinking it's a nice excuse to be a little bit lazy and a little bit productive around the house. Phew. It's Friday: the end of fall quarter, the end of my internship with Seattle Bride and the end of responsibility as I know it for three whole weeks. I'm breathing a little easier and smiling a little bigger this weekend while I snuggle up and relish in my newfound freedom. What are your weekend plans? In honor of a deep freeze and three consecutive snow days here in Seattle, I'd like to share a gorgeous winter wedding - my favorite kind! Sure, summer weddings are beautiful... bright colors, lush flowers and a glowing bridal tan. But there's just something magical about a winter wedding done right. I love warm chocolate browns and icy blues against a clean snowy backdrop. I love a clear sky on a cold day that creates the perfect blank canvas for romance! You'll see what I mean...

Perfect, right? It almost makes this crazy winter weather in the Pacific Northwest seem a little bit nicer... almost. As much as I've enjoyed staying in my pajamas for three days straight, I'm going a little bit stir crazy. ho ho ho

Phew! Has it really been five days since I've posted? That should tell you the kind of week I've had -- a whirlwind! The magazine is nearing publication and all the last-minute details are piling up. This internship has certainly opened my eyes to just how much work it takes to take an issue from ideas to publication!

So this weekend, I'm trying to take a breather and deck the house out with holiday cheer. By mid-November, I'm fully enthralled in all things Christmas. The holiday albums are loaded in my iPod and my favorite Christmas movies are lined up in my Netflix queue. Some people find it annoying; I think it's fabulous ;)

We bought a new sweater for Little Miss Sally, spent a few hours detangling glittering Christmas lights and sifted through the basement storage to pull out some extra decorations. What fun the holidays are!

I hope you're all feeling as festive and content as I am on this blistery Saturday night; there's so much to look forward to! Happy weekend, xo.

...I'm dreaming of this mustard-yellow sliding barn door & the charcoal walls in the bathroom -- my favorite color combo of the season! It's the perfect mixture of bright and dark, color and neutral, winter and summer. That fabulous door provides just the punch of sunshine that these shorter days leave me yearning for.

How was your weekend? Mine was extra nice because it was extra long! But sometimes breaks like that make Mondays that much harder... Here's to a productive week and just a few more days until Thanksgiving, hooray! Happy Monday :)

This adorable bride took the phrase quite literally, sporting romantic French braids and a precious miniature crown for the royal touch. She's reminiscent of a Disney princess bride, don't you think?

She pulls off the look brilliantly with fresh wildflowers, theatrical cap sleeves and a beaming grin.

Even the couple's grand exit screamed royalty as they raced through the rain under an old-fashioned umbrella. Sigh.

I'm so enamored with this kitchen-restaurant from the Ikea blog. It's casual, comfortable & fun -- I think it'd make a fabulously funky dining area in any home.

...stainless steel everything really gives this kitchen an industrial edge. Post "tonight's menu" on the chalkboard and rearrange the three charming tables for company. What a fun way to make eating at home a little bit more exciting!

I wouldn't mind eating dinner here night after night... white cloth tablecloth and all.

Happy weekend, finally! I'm incredibly exhausted and ready for a few days of R&R -- plus an extra hour of sleep on Sunday, hooray! See you in a few days.

Absolutely digging this messy-but-polished ballerina bun... really all I have time for lately!

With the flip of a calendar page today, I've officially stressed myself out. The holidays are quickly approaching, one internship is reaching its busiest time while the process of finding another is only beginning, and final projects & papers for school can no longer be put off.
